Mr Little Jeans - "The Suburbs" (Arcade Fire Cover)

Good heavens sometimes I love that "shuffle" exists. I'm also happy that I have enough storage on my phone that I don't have to continuously remove old music, otherwise I would never have re-stumbled across one of my favourite cover songs in the past decade. Monica Birkenes (aka Mr Little Jeans)'s cover of Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" is a song that I never seem to tire of. I mentioned in last year when Birkenes's debut album Pocketknife was released, but I don't think I gave it its proper due. While the addition of Birkenes whimsical voice to the song definitely makes for a very different feel, it is the dark electronic production that really causes this song to stand out. She takes an upbeat indie rock song and turns it into a bass-heavy electronic pop song, and the transformation almost seems to changes the feel and emotions behind the lyrics. That is damn impressive and makes for a song I will listen to again and again.
